To combat periodontal disease, one must be able to clean under the gum line, where pockets form between teeth and gums in the presence of decay.
Brushing for five minutes and flossing three times a day won't do a thing to flush out the microbes hidden in these pockets.
Steps
- Realize that this is a wound to your body – the same as an infected cut on your arm. You must eliminate the cause – keep the wound clean. Many people own an electric oral irrigator of some sort. It usually gets stored in the same place – under the sink gathering dust. Out of sight - out of mind. If there was a small cut on your hand that bled every time you washed your hands, it wouldn’t take you long to get to the doctor. The same thing is going on in your mouth, however you don’t see it (but you can sure smell it). Luckily, there is a simple and inexpensive way to clean those pockets every day. Electric counter top oral irrigation units just don't get used as often as they should.
- Use an oral irrigator that attaches to your shower head or sink faucet allows users to flush particles out which are trapped between the teeth and under the gum line.
- Make a rinse with one ounce of hydrogen peroxide and one ounce of warm water. Slosh the liquid around in your mouth for 15 to 20 seconds, and then spit it out. The mixture will penetrate deep into infected areas, destroying many germs and bringing much needed oxygen to the damaged cells.
Listerine, but any good mouthwash will do
- Use both rinses four times a day for three days if the disease is mild ... and for five days if it's advanced. After that period is up, your gums should have improved enough to allow you to eliminate the peroxide rinse and use only the salt solution ... once every other day for a few more weeks.
- Alternate with a good anti-bactericidal mouthwash that doesn't stain the teeth such as Biotene or Listerine which can be obtained from your local grocery store.
Tips
- Some people have found that a colloidal silver solution works well.
- After brushing your teeth at night, make sure you use the Water Pik. Be amazed at how much food particles remain even after tooth brushing.
Warnings
- To prevent mouth disease such as this, see your Dentist at least once a year. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and use your Water Pik at least twice a day, morning and night. after meals
- Remember also flossing is an important part of a complete dental home care program!
